Motion graphics


Motion Graphics are, simply put, graphics (and text) in motion. They come under the umbrella term of animation, which includes things like 2D and 3D animation, character animation, claymation, typography animation, stop motion, and more. Motion graphics are used in presentations, throughout your video content, within adverts, social assets, and on webpages.

Motion graphics are not to be confused with user interface (UI) design elements. Motion graphics involve animated graphics and text, while UI design involves static and interactive elements like buttons, forms, and navigation menus (we do this too, but we’re here to talk about motion graphics).

We’ve worked on projects where we’ve made logos move for presentations, created motion elements to be used within Rick Shiels’ YouTube video content, made short animations to show off a client’s team on social media, and so much more. When to use motion graphics

You know the big “N” that appears on the screen when you open Netflix? The one that appears with the dramatic “duh-dunnn” sound? That’s the power motion graphics can have, and recognition they can bring to your brand.

Imagine how much more powerful your pitch presentation would be if it had a unique opener like that, and when the prospect went on the website afterwards, the same animation style was used in the beginning of the showreel, or it appeared at the beginning or end of a video on socials?

Why use motion graphics?

What are the benefits of having motion graphics in your brand assets?

Using motion graphics gives your brand the opportunity to inject a bit of personality into your visual identity. They’re a way of applying the overall feeling of your brand to your visuals. A luxury brand might use motion graphics to their advantage by adding a very subtle movement within their typography on their website, whereas a brand like Duolingo might use them to bring their characters to life.

The use of motion graphics throughout a brand helps with bringing in that emotional connection. Trying to create a calming vibe for your brand? Let that typography float in, rather than sitting static on a page. On your social ads or assets, let’s bring an element of motion in to encourage them to feel the way you want them to feel when interacting with your brand.

They also help with storytelling, and taking users or customers on a journey. Say you’re explaining how a particular process works on your site, motion graphics bring a sense of flow and movement, helping them move from one point in their journey to the next.
