Conversion Rate Optimisation, or CRO, is the process of improving the effectiveness of a website (or apps, or other digital platform) by encouraging visitors to take specific actions that we’d consider to be conversions.

By analysing visitor behaviour, setting conversion goals, testing new strategies and adjusting them based on data, we can identify and remove barriers to conversions while also enhancing the overall user experience.

What is CRO?

CRO is all about improving efficiency and effectiveness for digital products and interfaces, resulting in an improved conversion rate.

The goal of a well executed CRO strategy is to improve the overall performance of a website and maximise the return on investment from users.

What is a conversion?

This will differ based on the type of business, and there are many things that could be monitored as a conversion. Some examples include:

  • Form submission
  • Sign ups (newsletter, account, etc)
  • Subscribing to something
  • Downloads (e.g. of an ebook/guide)
  • Adding to basket
  • Buying something
  • Booking a meeting
  • Requesting a callback
  • Sharing to social media
  • Clicking an affiliate link
  • Survey submissions

A ‘good’ conversion rate also looks different for every business, depending on the amount of traffic they receive, the quality of traffic, cost of the product or service, existing rate of conversion, etc.

What does a CRO agency do?

CRO projects require ongoing partnerships in which a website can be incrementally improved over time to meet objectives and improve ROI.

The start of a CRO project involves thorough analysis of existing analytics, UX and other data to identify areas for improvement and testing. We then define specific conversion goals and KPIs that align with business objectives and create hypotheses we can design, build, test and review. It’s very much a collaborative effort with clear goals in place from the start.
